The World Organization for Human Rights stands with the initiative of the UN Secretary-General The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women coincides with the launch of the ❞Unite to End Violence Against Women❝ campaign (November 25 – December 10), a 16-day initiative of activism that concludes on the day it commemorates Remembrance of International Human Rights Day (10 December).
his motto is under
❞Paint the world orange: Let’s end violence against women now!❝
Led by the UN Secretary-General and UN Women since 2008, the campaign aims to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls worldwide and calls for global action to raise awareness and promote advocacy for that goal and to provide opportunities to discuss challenges and solutions.
Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread, persistent and destructive human rights violations in our world today, and remains largely unknown due to the impunity, silence and stigma surrounding it.
In general, violence manifests itself in physical, sexual and psychological forms and includes:
intimate partner violence (beating, psychological abuse, marital rape, femicide);
Sexual violence and harassment (rape, forced sexual acts, unwanted sexual harassment, child sexual abuse, forced marriage, street harassment, stalking, cyber harassment)
human trafficking (slavery and sexual exploitation);
female genital mutilation;
Child marriage.
For further clarification, the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women issued by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 defines violence against women as follows: “Any violent act that is motivated by gender bias and that results in, or is likely to result in, harm or suffering to women, both physically sexual or psychological, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or private life.”
The negative consequences of violence against women and girls affect women’s psychological, sexual and reproductive health at all stages of their lives. For example, the disadvantages of the lack of early education are not only the main obstacle to girls’ right to education and its generalization, but ultimately restrict access to higher education and lead to limited job creation for women in the labor market.
While gender-based violence can happen to anyone, anywhere, some women and girls from certain groups are particularly at risk – for example, girls and older women, women who identify as lesbian, bisexual or transgender gender or intersex, immigrant and refugee women, indigenous and ethnic minority women. or women and girls living with HIV and disabilities, and affected by humanitarian crises.

.Violence against women continues to constitute a barrier to achieving equality, development and peace, as well as fulfilling the human rights of women and girls. Altogether, the promise of the Sustainable Development Goals – we will leave no one behind – cannot be achieved without ending violence against women and girls. Only 52 per cent of women married or in union freely make their own decisions about sexual relations, contraceptive use and health care.
71% of all victims of human trafficking in the world are women and girls, and 3 out of 4 of these women and girls are sexually exploited
